Heading courtesy of Neil Young! I think this post might better be headed “long engine diagnosis” but somewhere in between lies the truth. Engine died during runs to flush and diagnose overheating. Decision change fuel filter(s). Changed out, try and bleed diesel but no joy. OK, lift pump. Remove, inspect. One of the flapper valves unseated, tried to reseat with centre punch but no joy. Seek competent engineer to see if repair is possible (I know it is probably better just to replace this component but reuse, recycle etc) no joy, found one guy only to look and he counseled replacement. OK, search Internet for best price and found in UK for 60-70, much better than local supplier even with shipping. Wait five days for delivery. During wait I look hard at possible cause of lift pump failure. Two diesel filters are installed in series so fuel has to be sucked through one and pumped through the other. Possibly the additional vacuum needed to pull fuel from what is quite a deep tank plus the suck through filter caused? Good old mouth vacuum applied and could not suck enough to draw any fuel up. Decision remove diesel filter between lift pump and tank.
Overheating. Plan to use fernox again, slow move through hot secondary cooling. Coming to conclusion engine needs attention, maybe it will work down to Ijmuiden, that would be good. I’ll flush, run, pump, fettle Wednesday with a view to move shortly. Need to pull and clean electric circulation pump, redo the rubber hoses too. Oil change and diesel delivery all good tho..
